K9 Care Montana, Inc.

A nonprofit organization

Since 2010 K9 Care Montana provides service dogs and customized outdoor activities to Montana wounded veterans, first responders and the only program assisting children and families in Montana challenged by autism, at NO cost to the recipient.

We credit some of our success to my own personal experience surviving a trauma injury due to a gun shot wound over 30 years ago. I began training my very first mobility service dog (SD) in 1986. It was then I recognized I was unable to make it fully through recovery and rehabilitation on my own and personally observed the amazing benefits of having a SD and how it has helped me tremendously with independence. I also recognized the importance of a solid support group. One of our favorite slogans is "Together we make a difference." Since 2009 and as pioneers of Montana's service dog industry, we have assisted over 85 veterans with the majority being service dog projects. We continue to be the only Montana non-profit providing service dogs at no cost to children with autism. We look forward to continuing to serve our beautiful state of Montana and Park County. All recipients call our programs and services life changing, some call it life saving. Thank you for your support!~David W. Riggs/Founder CEO, K9CMT.

Testimonial

Being medically discharged after 35 years of military service and multiple combat tours I was diagnosed with C-PTSD w/associate depression and suicide ideation. The VA rated me above 100% disabled due to my mental conditions and physical injuries/restrictions. Not long after I was medically retired from military service, I started the healing process…

Circa 2017, Philipsburg, Montana. I received my first service dog, and his name was Freedom. My experience with K9 Care Montana, with David and his staff, was amazing, such compassion and understanding, David “Dogman” Riggs is an amazing human.

I grew up with dogs all my life so having a dog was nothing new to me. What was new for me was falling in love with a dog and forming the bond that David spoke to me about, this bond was so deep with Freedom. Freedom was amazing, he did so much for me, and I know that K9 Care MT went above and beyond to obtain this wonderful little puppy. David made sure that I had what I needed and checked on me and Freedom regularly. When Freedom unexpectedly passed it was again K9 Care MT and David who paid the bills for Freedoms last days. Davids compassion for people is exceptional. Given what he himself has been through, I call him “A Warrior’s Warrior”!!

Circa 2025, Livingston, Montana. I received my second service dog, and his name is Buck. Buck is a two-year-old Yellow Lab, and I am already forming that bond. He helps me off the floor should I fall, he helps me out of chairs and ensures I am ok. K9 Care Montana changed my life in such a way that it is hard to put into words. Your work David is a game changer and a life saver!
THANK YOU, DOGMAN!! Nothing but respect Brother!  -- Posted on Great Non-Profits August 2025
